What personal data is in this PDF?

Nineteen kinds of identifier, masked, with the page and line of each. Read on your device.

Find the personal identifiers in a PDF before it leaves your hands.

The short answer. Drop the PDF into the Integrity Scanner and open the Compliance tab. It lists every personal identifier it finds in the text, masked, with its page, its line and its HIPAA identifier category: Social Security numbers, dates of birth, medical record numbers, health plan IDs, account, card and routing numbers, licence and passport numbers, phone numbers, email and street addresses and more.

Before a form is emailed, filed or handed to another department, someone should know what personal data is in it. Reading every page by eye misses things; sending the file to an online service to be checked defeats the purpose. The scanner reads the text on the device that already holds the file and shows each identifier masked, so that the report itself gives nothing away.

The identifiers it finds

Government and identity numbers

Social Security numbers; driver licence, state ID and passport numbers.

Health identifiers

Medical record numbers, health plan and member IDs, provider NPIs, diagnosis codes (ICD-10), and admission, discharge or death dates.

Financial identifiers

Payment card numbers, bank routing numbers and account numbers. Card numbers, routing numbers and NPIs are validated by their check digits, which keeps a random run of digits from being reported.

Contact details

Phone numbers, email addresses and street addresses, and a person’s name when it appears in a labelled field.

Dates and devices

Dates of birth, vehicle identification numbers, device serial numbers, web addresses and IP addresses.

Masked, located, categorised

Each finding is shown masked, with its page and line and the category of the HIPAA identifier list it belongs to.

How to check a PDF

  1. Open the Integrity Scanner

    Go to docsupra.com/?abre=scanner.

  2. Drop the PDF

A PDF with a text layer, up to 40 MB, or a folder or ZIP of them. A batch shows how many files expose data and lets you filter to them.

  3. Open the Compliance tab

Read the list: the kind of identifier, the masked value, the page and the line.

  4. Make the redacted copy

An image-only PDF with the identifier lines blacked out and no text layer, to send instead of the original.

What it cannot find

It reads identifiers written as text in a PDF that has a text layer. A photo or a scanned image has no text to read, and the scanner says so. A person’s name is found when it sits in a labelled field such as “Patient name”; a name inside a paragraph is not. A clean list does not prove a file is free of personal data, and the check is not legal advice.

Questions

How do I find Social Security numbers in a PDF?

Drop the PDF into the Integrity Scanner and open the Compliance tab. Social Security numbers are listed masked, with the page and the line where each appears, together with the other identifiers in the text.

Is the PDF uploaded to be scanned?

No. The file is read on your own device, inside the browser. There is no upload endpoint, no server copy and no retention period; you can disconnect from the internet and it keeps working.

What is in the redacted copy?

An image-only PDF: each page is drawn as an image with the identifier lines blacked out, and there is no text layer, so the covered text cannot be copied out.

Does it work on photos of documents?

Not for this check. Identifiers are read from the text of a PDF. A photo or scan has no text layer; the scanner still reads what the image file itself exposes, such as location and device data.

What does it cost?

Where the file came from and whether it is safe to open are shown to everyone. Whether it was edited, how, and what it exposes comes with a check: 3 checks with the $9.99 pack, 50 with the $19.99 pass, or up to 1,000 files a month with the $14.99 subscription. It is included with Professional Team and Corporate Studio.
